Childbirth Education Series – Small Group Classes

Instructor: Kim Amos, ICCE, LCCE, CLC, CD (DONA), PCD(DONA), BDT(DONA)

Location: Instructor’s home at 6004 Columbia Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63139 (see map page)

Format: Classes are typically offered on Tuesday evenings for four weeks from 6:15 PM until 9:00 PM. Class sizes are limited so register early.

Curriculum:

Teaching aides - videos, posters, handouts, massage tools, model pelvis and baby

Week 1

    • Urban Legends, old wives tales

    • Childbirth…what comes to mind

    • A & P of pregnancy

    • Nutrition

    • Body mechanics

    • Relaxation exercises (Massage, Lotion, Imagery)

    • Labor (Practice vs. True Contractions, Water Breaks, How to Tell, Pre-term Labor)

  • Early labor

Week 2

    • Active labor (Dilation, effacement, station)

    • Interventions and hospital procedures

    • Coping techniques

    • Comfort measures

  • Breathing techniques

Week 3

    • Cesarean birth

    • Medication options (Narcotics , Epidural)

    • Informed decisions

    • Questions to ask

    • Transition

Week 4

  • Pushing

  • Birth

    • Recovery

    • Postpartum

  • Newborn care

Week 5

    • Breastfeeding
